Glossary
Scope statement
A concise, explicit description of what a project includes — and often what it excludes — used as the core reference document for what work has been agreed.
A concise, explicit description of what a project includes — and often what it excludes — used as the core reference document for what work has been agreed.
Example
A scope statement for a content retainer: "4 SEO-optimized blog posts per month (800-1,200 words each), 2 rounds of revision per post, published to client's CMS. Does not include: keyword research, distribution, or paid promotion."
Why it matters for agencies
A scope statement is often the single document a scope dispute actually gets resolved by reading. The clearer and more specific it is — especially about exclusions, not just inclusions — the less room there is for disagreement about a given request.
