Statement of work (SOW)
A document defining a specific engagement's deliverables, timeline, revision limits, and exclusions — the document that actually governs whether a request is in scope.
What it typically includes
- A list of specific deliverables (e.g., number of pages, features, or content pieces).
- The number of revision rounds included.
- Timeline and key milestones.
- Explicit exclusions — what's not covered.
How it differs from a contract
A master contract governs the overall relationship — payment terms, ownership, liability. The SOW governs a specific engagement's scope. Confusing the two is a common source of scope creep, since teams sometimes check the wrong document when a client request comes in. See the full comparison in Statement of Work vs. Contract.
