Glossary
Upsell (agency)
Selling a client more of the same type of service they already buy — a larger scope, higher tier, or additional volume — as distinct from cross-selling a different service.
Selling a client more of the same type of service they already buy — a larger scope, higher tier, or additional volume — as distinct from cross-selling a different service.
Example
A client on a 10-hour-per-month SEO retainer is upsold to a 20-hour tier after consistently needing more than the current retainer covers, formalized as a new contract rather than absorbed as ongoing overage.
Why it matters for agencies
A clean upsell, like a clean cross-sell, should be a new agreement at a new price — not just quietly letting a client's usage grow past what they're paying for and treating the excess as a customer-retention cost. Distinguishing an upsell opportunity from unmanaged retainer overage is often just a matter of which one gets formalized with paperwork.
