Vague scope language

Contract or SOW wording that describes deliverables in subjective, open-ended, or non-measurable terms, making it difficult to determine whether specific work is included or not.

Example

"Ongoing social media support" and "a professional-looking design" are both vague scope language — neither specifies a measurable quantity, format, or standard that could settle a disagreement about whether a particular request is included.

Why it matters for agencies

Vague scope language is usually written this way for a reason — flexibility, or speed in getting a contract signed — but that same flexibility is exactly what a client can lean on to argue almost any request fits within it. Precise, quantified language is less flexible to write but far cheaper to enforce.
